[Blog] More Draws Than a Wild West Saloon

And with yet another home draw on Saturday, Town equalled their all-time highest total in a season, with eight home matches still to play.

Make no mistake, this is almost certainly going to be a record-breaking season, at least as far as the columns in the league tables marked 'D' are concerned. Saturday's result was the ninth home draw of the season, equalling the highest number ever for a whole season, which was set itself just last year.

In the fifties and sixties, Portman Road would typically see four or five home draws a season, rising slightly to five or six in the seventies but falling away again in the eighties (1981/82 didn't have any home draws at all). In the nineties it went back to five or six, and the noughties didn't seen any increase, until the last few seasons.

In Joe Royle's last season there were eight home draws for only the fourth time ever; Jim Magilton's second season saw seven, and his third season (last year) saw nine home draws for the first time ever. Now Roy Keane looks set to build on this, already equalling that all-time record, and having over a third of the season still to play.

The six draws away from home looks unremarkable, but only in comparison to that astonishing 60% of Portman Road matches having been drawn. In fact, six out of 13 away matches represents 46%, and Town's all-time high for a season turns out to be 43%, from the 10 away draws in 1990/91 and 2004/05. So the club is well on the way towards a record number of draws away from home as well as at home!

Overall, Town's 54% of matches drawn is the highest in the top seven tiers of English football, and indeed, no other team has managed to draw over half of their games. I'm sure there must be some even lower down, but I started to lose the will to live when I reached the Ryman (Isthmian) Premier League.

The chasing pack is led by Port Vale (48% of matches drawn) and next home opponents Bristol City (46%). If you really can't stand draws any longer, I suggest you go and watch Marine in the Zamaretto (Southern) Premier League, who have drawn just once all season.

So, four more draws in 18 remaining games will make it the all-time highest number of draws in a season in Town's 65 full seasons as a professional club. Anyone care to bet against that happening?
